Energy Australia – Yallourn 2

During the June storm of 2021, heavy fooding into the Morwell River resulted in cracks in the Morwell River Diversion threatening to inundate the Yallourn Coal Mine. With the Yallourn Power Station providing more than 20 per cent of Victoria’s energy supply, an emergency declaration was made to plan for the risk.

Energy Australia was granted an approval to divert up to 3,500 megalitres of water per day to the Latrobe River.

GEM Industrial scope of works include:

  1. The supply of fusion services to string together each of the 5-ton 1600mm PN8 pipelines into approximately 120 metre strings of pipeline.

  1. Assist with the alignment of the 120-metre strings, towing them into place with specially built pipe trailers and heavy plant. The assembled strings were then fused together as a tie-in fusion using large excavators and cranes to assist with the heavy tie-in fusion.

  1. Supply and installation of a 20 plus large 1600mm PN8 stub Flanges and backing rings with the stubs manufactured in Australia from at 120mm HDPE sheet.

  1. Supply and freight large pipe rollers to allow the pipeline in one particular location to be pulled into a very tight space in one large long length, some 800 metres. This methodology saved many thousands of dollars allowing substantially less excavations for the location of the large fusion machine and plant on the side wall of the Morwell RiverDiversion.

  1. Fusion quality assurance and destructive testing of the 76mm wall thickness pipeline was also provided by GEM Industrial.
